On August 31 2017 Curious Art Gallery, the only not for profit artists cooperative in the Tweed Shire, will close its doors after 16 successful years. Since its inception in May 2001, and official opening in September 2001 in the iconic “Big Pink” Art Deco building on Chinderah Bay Drive, Curious Art Gallery has amassed over 70 members and held over 100 themed exhibitions.
The success of this NFP artist run initiative is measured by the personal and professional development of its members and the charitable endeavours within the community. Many members have gone on to create well respected local and international businesses. These include:
- Gilbert’s Tree
- Curious Digital Photography, and
- many other individual art based businesses.
“I hung my first ever painting for sale on the walls at Curious over a decade ago. There’s no doubt that these early years led to the foundation of Artable, an award winning local art school that now runs workshops with Australian and International artists worldwide. Thank you to the Curious art family from the bottom of my heart, you touched the lives of so many creatives & supported my own art journey in so many ways.” Gillian Buttress-Grove, Artable.
These comments well reflect the Cooperative’s core objective; to promote professional development of the arts, in the local community and beyond. The Gallery artists would especially like to thank the owners, manager and staff of the Chinderah Village Caravan Park for their community spirit and support of the arts. We also extend a broad thank you across the Tweed Shire community at large for its ongoing support of the Curious project spanning these past 16 years.
